Ukuthwala cultural practice. The concept of Ukuthwala is an age-old customary marriage practice prevalent amongst the Nguni-speaking tribes of South Africa. It is a practice whereby, preliminary to a customary marriage, a young man, by force, takes a girl to his home.

Ukuthwala is the South African term for bride kidnapping, the practice of a man abducting a young girl and forcing her into

marriage, often with the consent of her parents. These “marriages by capture” occur mainly in rural parts of South Africa, in particular the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

In ancient Africa, particularly among the Nguni, Ukuthwala was a condoned albeit abnormal path to marriage targeted at certain girls or women of marriageable age.
