RuneScape's PvP element called"the Duel Arena
Jagex announces that it will be sending "messages to players who we've identified as being involved on"responsible gambling" within "the next few hours". "For those who have been involved, we want to be clear : this is your single or only warning" said the statement.
Other measures that the developer might think of as punishments for RWT activity include wealth removal - essentially removing ill-gotten gains from accounts of players at an server level and possible bans.
RuneScape's PvP element, called"the Duel Arena, will also have stricter rules in place. Jagex says the feature "has been a flashpoint in this toxic behavior" and that 38 per cent of the bans for RWT action up until now are due to this part that the player plays. Jagex says this is equivalent to "thousands of bans every month".
The developer seems to be going with the nuclear choice, saying "we're looking in the long-term to eliminate this Duel Arena out of RuneScape entirely." Until then, it will implement "some temporary measures" to improve PvP "until our development teams can deliver an important update that completely replaces the Duel Arena next year."
This will come with a limit to the total amount GP, or gold points the players can stake on an event at the Duel Arena. Players will be able to place bets "no higher than $50m GP for each duel". Additional measures aren't provided as of now.
Jagex claims that "a brand new game that will become part of an ongoing Elder God Wars storyline" will replace Duel Arena in early 2022 But no other details are yet available.
While the full impact of these changes is yet to be judged it is clear that they are among the most powerful measures any studio has made to prevent external abuse of its systems for real-world monetary gain . If successful, similar measures are likely to be implemented across the MMO area in the future.
