These numbers represent the latest physical sales in software

In the overall picture, US hardware sales were down by 40% year-over year to $90.8 million, and each platform suffered a drop. "We are hoping to see the sales of hardware increase with the introduction on the Xbox One and PS4 in November," NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement.

In total, the total industry sales were up 1 percent, reaching $521 million, but this is only approximately half of the market's spending on games throughout the month of April, Callahan explained.

"These numbers represent the latest physical sales in software, hardware and other accessories. They make up about 50% of total gaming-related spending of consumers," he said. "When considering our estimate for additional physical format purchases during August like rentals and used games at $178 million and our estimate for digital format sales, which include complete game content and add-on downloads that include micro-transactions and subscriptions, mobile apps and the total spend on social games, which is $528 million. The total spending for August is barely over $1.2 billion."

With the exception of January 2022, which saw gains due to an additional reporting week in December 2022. most recent year that retail sales increased over the year was in the month of October in 2022.

Moving to software, this segment grew 21 percent to reach $305 million, in comparison to $253 million the previous year. This was driven by the move from Madden NFL 23 in the NPD Group's report and the release of Saints Row IV, Disney Infinity as well as Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Callahan stated.
